: When sourcing three-phase induction motors, one of the most common questions is: what is the difference between IE3, IE4 and IE5, and which one should I buy? The efficiency classes look similar, but the price gap can be significant. Choose the wrong one and you either overpay or fail local energy-efficiency regulations. This guide explains the standards, the real efficiency differences, and how to match the class to your application.

IE stands for International Efficiency, defined in IEC 60034-30-1. The higher the number, the lower the losses and the higher the efficiency. In China, the equivalent naming is YE3, YE4 and YE5, mapped to GB 18613 energy-efficiency grades. Since 2021, IE3 (YE3) has been the minimum legal efficiency for new small and medium induction motors sold in China; IE2 and below are phased out.
| Item | IE3 (Premium) | IE4 (Super Premium) | IE5 (Ultra Premium) |
| Typical efficiency (75 kW, 4-pole) | ~95.0% | ~95.8% | ~96.5% |
| Loss reduction vs IE3 | Baseline | ~15-20% lower | ~30%+ lower |
| Key design measures | Optimized core, winding, fan | Higher-grade steel, more copper, precision machining | Low-loss materials + structural optimization, sometimes PM-assisted |
| Price level | Baseline | +10-20% | +30-50% |
| Best for | General duty, short running hours | Continuous-duty main drives | 24/7 full-load, retrofit, high electricity cost |
Annual running hours. This is the single most important factor. If a motor runs only 2-3 hours a day (standby pumps, occasional duty), IE3 is enough and the extra cost of IE4/IE5 will not pay back. For 24/7 fans, pumps and compressors, IE4 or IE5 typically pays back the price difference in 1-2 years through lower electricity bills.
Actual load factor. Motors run most efficiently at 60-100% of rated load. If the real load is consistently below 50%, even an IE5 motor cannot deliver its rated efficiency. Selecting the right power rating matters more than chasing the highest class. For low-voltage induction motors, match the power to the load first.
Regulations and export markets. Since July 2023, the EU mandates IE4 for motors from 7.5 kW to 200 kW (with some exceptions). Several Chinese regions offer subsidies for grade-1 efficiency (YE4/IE4) and above. If your equipment is exported, specify the target market's requirement up front.
General duty, up to ~2000 h/year: IE3 - best value
Continuous main drives, 4000+ h/year: IE4 - pays back in 1-2 years
High electricity cost, energy retrofit, EU export: IE5 - maximum long-term savings
Efficiency class is not a "higher is always better" choice - it must fit the actual duty cycle. SHANGDIAN (Shanghai Electric Motor Factory) supplies YE5 general-purpose induction motors alongside YE3 and YE4 ranges, all certified to national efficiency standards. Send us your power, running hours and budget and we will recommend the class with the shortest payback for your application.
