: "Permanent magnet motors save more energy than induction motors" - true, but few people can explain why or how much. This guide explains the efficiency principle of PMSM, the real energy savings by application, and when a PMSM retrofit actually pays for itself.

An induction motor's rotor works by electromagnetic induction: current flows in the rotor bars, heating them and wasting energy (rotor copper loss). No induction motor can fully avoid this. A permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) has magnets on the rotor instead, so no induced current is needed and the rotor barely heats up. On top of that, a PMSM keeps a high power factor and high efficiency even at light load, where an induction motor's power factor drops noticeably.
| Application | Typical saving | Why |
| Constant speed (pumps/fans on the grid) | 2-6% efficiency gain | No rotor loss + higher power factor |
| VFD-driven (inverter duty) | Another 3-10% vs induction + VFD | Efficiency holds at low speed; induction drops |
| Light / variable load | Combined 10-30% savings | High efficiency across the whole load range |
Note: savings depend strongly on load factor. The PMSM advantage is largest at low load factor and smaller at full load. Tell the manufacturer your real load profile, not just the nameplate.
Take a 30 kW motor running 16 h/day at 70% load. If the induction motor is 93% efficient and the PMSM 96%, the saving is about 30 x 0.7 x (1/0.93 - 1/0.96) = 0.85 kWh per hour, roughly 13.6 kWh per day - about USD 2-4 per day depending on tariff, or USD 800-1,200 per year at 300 running days. The PMSM premium is usually recovered in 2-4 years; every year after that is net saving.
Continuous duty: pumps, fans and compressors running 16+ h/day give the shortest payback;
VFD applications: the low-speed efficiency advantage is largest;
High-precision speed control: PMSMs respond faster and more accurately;
Energy retrofit projects: see our motor energy retrofit guide.
Only a few running hours per day: electricity savings will not recover the price premium;
Very light load (<30%) without speed control:first consider a smaller motor or VFD;
Severe shock loads: evaluate step-out risk and overload protection carefully.
SHANGDIAN (Shanghai Electric Motor Factory) supplies TYP low-voltage PMSMs and SDPM5 variable-frequency PMSMs, plus complete VFD packages. Send us your load type, running hours, load factor and electricity tariff and our engineers will calculate the payback and tell you honestly whether a PMSM is worth it.
